Running Safety Tips in Sydney

Running gearBe Seen in Sydney

– Sydney is a busy city, run in bright coloured clothing where possible at all times.

– When running in sub optimal conditions i.e. dark, rain etc. wear “reflectors” in addition to your brightly coloured running kit.

Be Alert

– NEVER assume motorists can see you, we know what Sydney drivers are like.

– Always slow down at intersections or come to a complete stop and ensure it is safe to cross.

– Remember it is not a race and there are no points for arriving home battered and bruised.

– Running with headphones can be dangerous. If you prefer to run whilst listening to music, ensure you are still able to hear surrounding noises such as cars, other runners and pedestrians.

Running safetyBe Cautious

– Run on footpaths or designated running lanes where possible, Sydney has some beautiful paths.

– If you must run on the road, run facing on-coming traffic; they may not see you but at least you can see them and take action to avoid collisions.

– Avoid running on the road in the dark and rain.

– Be aware of where you’re placing your feet and the surface you’re running on. Some paving can become VERY slippery when wet. Be particularly vigilant on uneven surfaces.

– Alter your running route on a regular basis.

Running safe gearBe Sensible

– If you’re fatiguing, slow down or walk to recover. Good form is always a priority. Running tired will compromise your technique & lead to injuries.

– Carry identification and details of any medical condition on you at all times.

– A small amount of cash (enough for a cab or bus fare) is also useful for emergency situations where continuing on your run is not an option.

– Avoid running in extreme weather conditions.

– Keep well hydrated in warm weather and run in the shade (or indoors) where possible.

– Know where to find shelter if running in rainy or stormy weather.

Be Polite (Runners Etiquette)

– Keep to the left hand side of the path/trail that you are running.

– Never run more than two abreast and always make room for oncoming pedestrian traffic if in a group.

– Alert pedestrians when coming up behind them.  Don’t assume they have heard you or are aware of their surroundings.

Be Social

– Run with a friend.

– Join a Run Club.

– Safety in numbers.
