Roughly 2 months ago, I caught wind that there was a new Recreational park set up, just tucked away behind the busyness of North Lakes. I enquired and followed the directions on how to get there – this new park wasn’t even on google maps. Sure enough, I had found it. On the corner of Parkway Tce and Swanson St is a secluded park. A hidden treasure for fitness-minded people like myself. And it’s well away from the hustle and bustle of the Anzac Avenue motorway. Within these grounds, they have an assortment of stations that pander to your more callisthenics type work out – mainly bodyweight strength training.

The highlight I find in this park is that it caters to all fitness levels. For example, if you can’t do pull-ups, there are suspension trainers that you can use to progress your way up to the said task. They have a 250m track marked out in 10m intervals so you can easily set yourself a cardio timed goal. Little pictures on each station give a brief look at what to do for each exercise. In the centre of it all, they have set a lovely eye piece of shrubbery in cased by a cement bench, to which you can use as a height for jump squats (or box jumps) or as simply a place to sit whilst watching the kids play around. Family friendly park

This park is definitely family friendly. Everything can be used at your own discretion, during the day, or at night – they have it lit up but be advised that you should bring mozzie spray. Unfortunately, there are somethings to note that weren’t properly planned or thought out. Though they were probably designed with the best intention, the end product may need rethinking for the next project. In the midst there are 3 kettlebell-shaped weights that run along a pole and can only go up and down, each bearing different resistance. It says they can be used for squats, bicep curls, tri cep extensions and upright rows etc. However, these movements cannot be performed if the plane it travels in, is only straight up and down, similar to how you wouldn’t do a bicep curl on a Smith Machine.

Also, as mentioned before, the little pictures describing how each exercise should be executed, does not necessarily mirror how the body works or should move. Now you can download the app provided or better yet, hire one of our highly qualified North Lakes mobile Personal Trainers to take you through the ropes. All and all I would definitely give this park an 8 out of 10. Great location and it is a great place to be if you don’t wish to draw attention to yourself. The fact that you can’t really go here during the day is a bummer for me, not because I am lazy, but because there is no shade where you want it to be, and in this Aussie sun, you need to be sun safe.
