Bulletproof Coffee – Yay or Naf?

Bulletproof Coffee (BPC) has recently taken off in the northern parts of the world and Australia. It is “scientifically proven” to make you feel more alert, is satisfying, kills hunger, eliminates jitters often caused by high caffeine intake, and keeps you going all day.

Bulletproof Coffee is a trademarked product with it’s own brand of coffee beans and recipe to go with it. BPC is a hyper-jacked version of your normal black coffee. The recipe includes black Upgraded Coffee (BPC company’s trademarked coffee beans), unsalted butter and oil. Basically you make your black coffee, then whack it in a blender with the butter (up to 80grams of the stuff!!!!) and oil and blend it until it emulsifies and looks more like a latte than a black coffee. Then, drink and enjoy.

Research is unclear of whether or not regular coffee consumption is actually good for you or not. Potential benefits include lower risk of diabetes, alzheimer’s and many cancers. Potential harmful effects of coffee include increased blood pressure, disrupted sleep and a higher risk of miscarriage.

What is clear is that BPC is probably not the wisest thing for you to be consuming. Avid drinkers of BPC can consume up to three cups a day, which to many people may not sound like a lot of coffee. But check this out.

A standard cup of black coffee with no added sugar (think long black) has only 1 calorie.

A standard cup of coffee with whole milk (think flat white) has 120 calories. Of course you will have to account some extra calories if you have sugar in your coffee.

Now compare this with BPC. When this brew is made with 2 tablespoons of butter and 2 tablespoons of oil, you are looking at a whopping 468 calories!!! And then think of the people who are consuming up to three cups of the stuff a day!

Due to the mega high calorie content of this cup of coffee, you would have to be very, very careful with fat intake for the rest of the day and focus more on mono- and poly- unsaturated fats, as well as keeping track of your calorie intake and making sure you are very prepared for the rest of the meals and adding a tonne more vegetables in during the day to balance it out.

Our verdict on BPC is avoid it if you can. Stick with your standard cup of black coffee in the mornings and eat a well balanced, healthy diet.

Happy eating!
