Here in Redcliffe we have some beautiful beaches to choose from, but I have to say that Sutton’s Beach in Margate is my favourite.
Starting at the Redcliffe SLSC, Suttons beach runs for about 3km, the water is flat, which is perfect for a post run swim! Sutton’s Beach is a popular spot to exercise in Margate, the locals love to be near the water, whether it’s walking the dog, jogging, biking or roller blading.
At Sutton’s Beach, there is a good walking track along the esplanade, but if you want to take your training up a notch, head down on to the beach and run on the sand. It’s a great way to build up strength in your legs, tone the muscles and increase your cardio fitness. There are a couple of great ways to get a good sand running workout. First, you can just take your normal run to the sand, this option is best for people who have been running for a while, and are comfortable with taking things to the next level. Be warned, the uneven and constantly shifting and changing nature of sand makes your run much harder, so don’t be surprised if you have to slow down, and take a few more breaks than normal. For an easier run, run on the harder wet sand near the water, for the more advanced take it on to the soft sand and feel those legs burn!
My favourite option, is to do an interval workout on the sand. Grab a timer (there are plenty of apps available for your phone) and set it for 30 second intervals. Run on the sand as fast as you can (or walk if you are a beginner) for 30 seconds, then rest for 30 seconds. Repeat this as many times as you can. You’ll notice your legs burning, you’ll be out of breath and super sweaty. If you find all of this a bit hard to do on your own , why not enlist the help of your local Redcliffe Personal Trainer.
A few safety notes for running on sand, please pay attention to where you are running, we don’t want any rolled ankles, and workout at your own level. If you haven’t exercised for a while, take it a bit easier, maybe add in a few walking intervals to give you a bit of a break every now and then. Remember we want to work on progress, so take your time to build up your fitness levels if you’re new to this.
Redcliffe is a beautiful city, and working out on the beach just provides that added motivation to get out breathe the fresh air and work towards your goals.
Of course, if you’re looking for some added motivation, don’t forget to contact your local Fitness Enhancement Personal Trainer who’d be happy to help you reach those goals.
