10 Habits of Healthy People

What habits do healthy people have in common? It might not be what you think. People who live a fairly healthy lifestyle have little habits that they include in their everyday life. These customs can be quite simple and easy to make a part of your daily routines. Find out how you can improve your health and quality of life by following these simple rules and notice the positive changes!

Eat Breakfast

We’ve all heard the saying ‘breakfast is the most important meal of the day’. It’s important for several reasons. It starts up your metabolism and stops you from overeating later. Studies show that adults who have a healthy breakfast are more productive at work, and kids who eat brekkie perform better on tests. If you don’t feel like a big egg and bacon breakfast, something simple like a tub of yoghurt, a piece of fruit or a smoothie will give you the same benefits.

Plan Your Meals

It’ll help you save time and money! Block out some time once a week – the weekend is a good time, plan your menu, plan your shopping list, and pre-prepare as much as possible so you’re ready to go for the upcoming week. Meal prep keeps you in control. You know what you’re eating and when, and it helps prevent you reaching for a sugary treat or fast food when you’re hungry.

Drink Water

Staying hydrated is important for brain and muscle function, healthy skin, aids digestion, clears toxins from your body and it may also help you lose weight. Drinking more water helps reduce hunger and stops you drinking high calorie sugary drinks. If you’re not a fan of plain water, add flavor with slices of orange, lemon, lime, or cucumber, or try sparkling for something a bit different.

Exercise

Strength training helps your body burn fat and build lean muscle – boosting metabolism, helping you lose weight even at rest! Exercise carries so many other benefits including improved mood, improved sleep, increased energy, reduced risk of chronic disease, improved self esteem and a longer life!

Log off

We’re constantly logged in these days – between our emails, text messages, phone calls and checking social media we can spend so much time online we miss out on important face-to-face time with friends, family and kids. Set a time to log off and put the phone down. When you cut back on screen time, it gives you time to do other things. Go for a walk, hang out with a friend, or take the kids to the park.

Learn Something New

Learning new skills helps to keep your brain healthy. Sign up for a dance class or a photography workshop. Learn a musical instrument or a new language. The mental work it takes can slow the signs of aging and may even delay the effects of Alzheimer’s disease.

Don’t Smoke

If you do smoke, quit. It’s a big move toward better health. Your body starts to repair itself quickly. As soon as 20 minutes after your last cigarette, your heart rate and blood pressure drop. Save yourself money and increase your lifespan! Why wait? Kick the habit, today.

Sleep Well

A good sleep keeps you in a better mood, improves memory and focus, and helps you learn new things. In the long term, it lowers your risk of heart disease and even helps you lose weight. The average adult needs 7 to 9 hours a night. For the best rest stay on schedule – going to bed and waking up at about the same times every day, and avoid screen time right before bed, it overstimulates your brain and makes it hard to switch off.

Get outside

As little as 10 minutes in the sunshine raises vitamin D levels which is good for your bones, your heart, and your mood. Plus, being outside means you’re more likely to move your body instead of sitting on the couch. Choose nature over city streets, if you can. One study found that people who spent time in green spaces were calmer than people who walked in built-up areas.

Work on Balance

If you’re young and active, good balance will help you avoid injuries. If you’re older, it will keep you stay active longer and reduce your risk of slips and falls. No matter your age, good balance means stronger core and better performance. Yoga and tai chi are great ways to work on it, but anything that involves instability will help – walking on unlevel surfaces, balance on one leg, sit on a fit ball.
